Being the Hero

Being the Hero: Embracing Our Identity in Christ

The Spiritual Battle Within

The devil cannot coexist with the Holy Spirit in our hearts, yet our minds remain a battleground as long as we exist in the flesh with its sinful nature. Awareness of this internal conflict is crucial, as Hosea 4:6 warns, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” Recognizing the spiritual struggle allows us to actively choose how we respond to life’s challenges. Knowing our identity in Christ empowers us to be the hero in every situation, rather than a villain or a passive bystander.

Understanding Our Identity in Christ

Understanding our identity in Christ begins with the recognition that we are God’s children, loved and chosen by Him. 1 Peter 2:9 states, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” This divine election affirms our worth and entrusts us with a purpose. When faced with moral dilemmas, this awareness compels us to rise above our base instincts and reflect God’s love and justice in our actions, embodying the qualities of a true hero.

Equipped to Stand Against Evil

Our identity in Christ equips us with the strength to resist evil and stand firm in righteousness. Ephesians 6:10-11 instructs, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” The armor of God includes:

  • The belt of truth

  • The breastplate of righteousness

  • The shield of faith

This spiritual armor fortifies us against temptations and deception, ensuring that we are not passive victims but active combatants for good. Romans 8:37 reinforces this, declaring, “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

A Mindset of Servanthood and Sacrifice

Being a hero in Christ also involves cultivating a mindset of servanthood and sacrifice. Jesus set the ultimate example, as Mark 10:45 highlights: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Emulating Christ’s humility and service encourages us to prioritize others’ well-being over selfish desires.

For instance, in the movie Tears of the Sun, a soldier chooses to protect a vulnerable woman from being assaulted, despite the chaos and danger surrounding him. This act of heroism mirrors the selflessness Christ calls us to embody.

Choosing Heroism in Everyday Life

Knowing our identity in Christ empowers us to choose heroism over villainy or passivity in any situation. By:

  • Recognizing the ongoing spiritual battle

  • Understanding our divine election

  • Equipping ourselves with God’s armor

  • Adopting a servant’s heart

  • Embracing our role within the body of Christ

We prepare ourselves to make righteous choices. As Galatians 5:16 encourages, “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” Walking by the Spirit, we embody the heroism that reflects our true identity in Christ, making a profound impact on the world around us.
